![]() ![]() A game this huge should've made it to American shores. The cartridge itself had to incorporate its own compression chip to add amazing graphics to the aging SNES. Like its spiritual predecessor Tales of Phantasia, the game was a real-time, action oriented RPG, an incredible feat considering that their biggest JRPG rival, the Final Fantasy series, was sticking to its tried and true turn-based systems. And so, the team created Star Ocean: Fantastic Space Fantasy in 1996, and it was literally the largest game on the SNES. Tri-Ace's first game was to be inspired by space travel fiction like Star Trek, where a crew would go to the farthest reaches of the universe and interact with alien species. Of course, the changes Namco made led to a very successful franchise, so they knew what they were doing. Needless to say, the big three of Wolf Team, Yoshiharu Gotanda, Masaki Norimoto, and Joe Asanuma left, taking a large portion of the company, and formed a new company called Tri-Ace. Even the artwork was shifted from Wolf Team's own artist to that of a more popular manga artist's. First, they changed the name of the game to Tales of Phantasia, then they excised a huge chunk of the story, including a well-crafted backstory to the game's villain, Dhaos. But, publishers being publishers, they wanted to make some changes. Lo and behold, Namco was willing to dish out some cash for this company. So, when the Wolf Team wanted to make a game called Tales Phantasia, the company needed some outside help. They made some nice games, but they all sold poorly because of Telenet's shitty reputation as a shitty company. The second installment of a series ahead of its time, boasting both an amazing battle system and an annoying skill systemīack in the early 90s, there was this development team called Wolf Team, a subsidiary of Telenet Japan.
